Omaha Shorebird Protection Group
Members of this recently renamed group have enthusiastically taken on the task of protecting the shorebird population again at Omaha (inc the endangered NZ dotterels).
The main focus will be the predator control, without this the eggs and chicks get eaten by a range of pests including rats, stoats and hedgehogs.
The group are looking for more volunteers to assist with the trapping, also those keen to help monitor the birds or just lend a hand with rosters and local advocacy. No special skills needed, training will be given as the group has help from many experts in the local community, together with advice and support from ARC, DOC and RDC.
The group has begun its trapping programme and is about to start monitoring during the nesting season. Email Joanne McPhee from the group to find out more.
