Karioitahi Beach Care Group

Aim: "To restore, preserve and conserve the foreshore and dunes to a distance of 500m either side of the surf patrol clubhouse for the benefit and enjoyment of all beach users". Since being set-up the group has planted over 5000 native dune binding plants and has largely achieved this aim. Karioitahi Beach Care are now hard at work addressing a problem that plagues many of our beaches - vehicles on beaches - both the damage to the natural environment including dune plants and shellfish, and real concerns about the safety of beach users.

Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society


Forest and Bird is New Zealand's largest, national environmental organisation. It is involved in a range of conservation issues. Forest and Bird's purpose is "to preserve and protect the indigenous plants and animals and natural features of New Zealand, for the benefit of the public including future generations". The Society is an independent body reliant on the generosity of its members and the public for its funding. Forest and Bird is predominantly a member-driven Society. Local branches run field trips, talks and meetings and elect committee members that look at local conservation issues.
