New Zealand's environmental management institutions were largely established during the late 1980's, as part of the gbroader governmental organisation of that time. More recently, concerns have been expressed about the ability of these institutions, both national and regional, to effectively address current environmental and infrastructural issues facing the country.
Reform in Paradise will focus on critically examining how well New Zealand's current environmental governance structure is performing and how it might be strengthened in the future. It will review current initiatives and proposals to modify our environmental institutions as well as experiences and initiatives from other comparable countries. In particular, the reforms to New Zealand's environmental institutions proposed by the National-led government will be fully considered and tested at the conference.
The conference will be designed to be both informative and provocative. The Environmental Defence Sosicety will be commissioning one or more think-pieces, which will be released prior to the conference, to help frame the conference deliberations and stimulate constructive debate.

Normally this volunteer project meets every Tuesday, however as it is outside the breeding season, the kokako project now meets every second Tuesday.
The work at the moment is clearing the bait lines of vegetation and trip hazards so that come August we will be all ready toput out bait again. This project is in beautiful remote bush with a high chance of seeing birds like kaka and tomtits and perhaps even a kokako!
Volunteers need to have NZ tramping experience and tramping boots.
For meeting place and time, contact Mags Ramsey on mags.ramsey@arc.govt.nz or 09 536 7012
