On Motuora Island we have approximately 22,000 seedlings for planting this year. Tree planting is done over the winter months generally starting in April or May (dependant on soil moisture) & concluding in August or September. This is done so the trees have enough time to become established in the dampness of winter to sustain them through the summer dry season. Come & join us on the last Sunday of each month to plant trees. There are plenty of spades and other tools on the Island so there is no need to bring spades with you, we have everything required.
The ferry departs from Sandspit 8 am returning at approximately 4 pm & costs $20 dollars for adults, $10 for children 5 years to 15 years and children under 5 years are free. We use Water Taxis which makes booking very important; if you turn up unannounced there may not be room for you. There is also an additional responsibility for those who book to come to honor their booking (except in emergencies) as some trips will be number limited.
We will provide a sausage sizzle with tea or coffee available in the nursery at lunchtime. You may wish to bring a snack & a drink for your morning tea on the Island. Please ensure that your footwear is clean of soil or seeds that may introduce unwanted weeds to Motuora and that there are no pests stowing away in your bags, big or small, exotic ants to rats & everything in between have the potential to adversely affect this special Island.
