The Permaculture Annual Hui - Queen's birthday weekend

9:00am
May
30

Titiro whakamuri,
Whakarite inaianei, hei haangai whakamua
Embrace the past,
Prepare now for the future

This year's hui will be our first ever marae based annual Hui and a
milestone in grass-roots bi-cultural empowerment and partnership.

There will be several special guests speaking on a range of topics and
many of the 'elders' of permaculture in Aotearoa will present a synopsis
of their permaculture 'careers' thus far prior to receiving a PiNZ
Permaculture Diploma.

Hui activities will include making and eating hangi, raranga / weaving,
kapa haka, permablitz, making a cob oven, site visits and much much
more. Lots of laughter and entertainment guaranteed.

This event will use Open Space Technology to organise workshops,
networking and project development opportunities. Some of the workshops
already on offer include rongoa Maori (traditional Maori medicine),
Transition Culture, local food security, permaculture education, and
project funding.

One of our major objectives for this year's hui is to drastically
increase the attendance of Maori from all over Aotearoa who are active
in permaculture and its various expressions of /tino rangatiratanga/. We
want this Hui to be a milestone in grass-roots bi-culturalism in
Aotearoa New Zealand. Another objective for this year's hui is to
attract in many people new or unfamiliar with permaculture, yet who are
skilled and active in their own communities, to come and join in the
conversation about building a truly sustainable nation.

As per custom, on Sunday morning we will hold the PiNZ Annual General
Meeting. Help shape the direction of ecological design, active
citizenship, Transition Culture, community resilience and cultural
regeneration in Aotearoa today. At our AGM, after 30 years of
permaculture in this land we will evaluate how far we have come,
identify where we want to steer the permaculture waka for the coming
year and offer feedback, share ideas, create a shared vision and design
an action plan to move this country forward.

We are also warmly inviting back Transition leaders from all around the
country to join in and share their ideas, experiences and wisdom about
(re)designing resilient, thriving communities.

So write down the dates immediately in your rataka / diary; Call up and
invite all your friends; Bring your family, your passion and your best
ideas; and nourish yourself with a weekend of fun, whanau, inspiration
and community building.

Everyone is welcome!!! We look forward to seeing you there!!!

Reform in Paradise: Threat or Opportunity? Organised by the Environmental Defence Society

8:00am
Jun
8

New Zealand's environmental management institutions were largely established during the late 1980's, as part of the gbroader governmental organisation of that time. More recently, concerns have been expressed about the ability of these institutions, both national and regional, to effectively address current environmental and infrastructural issues facing the country.

Reform in Paradise will focus on critically examining how well New Zealand's current environmental governance structure is performing and how it might be strengthened in the future. It will review current initiatives and proposals to modify our environmental institutions as well as experiences and initiatives from other comparable countries. In particular, the reforms to New Zealand's environmental institutions proposed by the National-led government will be fully considered and tested at the conference.

The conference will be designed to be both informative and provocative. The Environmental Defence Sosicety will be commissioning one or more think-pieces, which will be released prior to the conference, to help frame the conference deliberations and stimulate constructive debate.

Motuora Planting Day

8:00am
Jun
14
Activity type:
- Revegetation/planting
Region:
Hauraki Gulf Islands

On Motuora Island we have approximately 22,000 seedlings for planting this year.   Tree planting is done over the winter months generally starting in April or May (dependant on soil moisture) & concluding in August or September.   This is done so the trees have enough time to become established in the dampness of winter to sustain them through the summer dry season.   Come & join us on the last Sunday of each month to plant trees.   There are plenty of spades and other tools on the Island so there is no need to bring spades with you, we have everything required.
The ferry departs from Sandspit 8 am returning at approximately 4 pm & costs $20 dollars for adults, $10 for children 5 years to 15 years and children under 5 years are free.   We use Water Taxis which makes booking very important; if you turn up unannounced there may not be room for you.   There is also an additional responsibility for those who book to come to honor their booking (except in emergencies) as some trips will be number limited.
We will provide a sausage sizzle with tea or coffee available in the nursery at lunchtime.   You may wish to bring a snack & a drink for your morning  tea on the Island. Please ensure that your footwear is clean of soil or seeds that may introduce unwanted weeds to Motuora and that there are no pests stowing away in your bags, big or small, exotic ants to rats & everything in between have the potential to adversely affect this special Island.   Check out planting dates, other opportunities to help & find out interesting things about Motuora on our web site www.motuora.org.nz   Bookings are essential on committee@motuora.org.nz or Eilene Lamb (09) 427 8911

Le Roys Bush - East of Highbury planting (9.30 to 11.30)

Jun
20
Activity type:
- Revegetation/planting
Region:
North Shore

20 June - Le Roys Bush - East of Highbury planting (3rd Saturday - 9.30 to 11.30)

  • Planting a wide range of species in the area to the east of the Highbury shops on Birkenhead Ave which forms the main headwaters for the Le Roys Bush stream.  The aim is to reduce the seed banks of weeds that are carried down the stream from both private and public property.  The area has been cleared of weeds by contractors working under grants sponsored by an  ARC EIF (Environmental Initiative Fund) grant and by the Birkenhead/Northcote Community Board.  There is no parking or public access to this land - walk down the private right-of-way between Slipp-Inn and 79 Birkenhead Ave.
  • Note: the site is uneven - it is not suitable for very young children or for people with walking difficulties.
  • Please wear suitable clothing and footwear - gumboots if you have them. There will be some spades available - but bring your favourite if you can.
  • Many thanks to The Lounge cafe at 55 Birkenhead Avenue for their support. They are offering two vouchers up to the value of $40 for people who take part in the planting day.  The Lounge is the ONLY restaurant in Highbury that has a view down over Le Roys.

Click here to see what the view from The Lounge was like in 2008: View of LeRoys from The Lounge 31 May 2008 showing pest plants such as pampas grass and ginger plants just below the apartment blocks on the left.

Here is what the view is like at present after a year's work: View of Upper Le Roys Bush From TheLounge Cafe - April 2009. The dead trees in the middle foreground are pest trees like willow and privet which have been treated to prevent them further spreading into Le Roys Bush.  The clear ground on the left is now free of pest plants and ready for planting. In the foreground is private property where water runnoff from Highbury starts the Le Roys Bush stream.  Our volunteers are removing pest plants such as gorse, woolly nightshade, ginger, privet, pampas, etc. We hope to work with land owners to replace these weeds with flax and native shrubs that will help keep Le Roys Bush and stream pest free.

Hopefully, in a year's time the view will be weed free and the bare land will be covered in flourishing natives.

There are a lot of beer and alco-pop bottles and other inorganic rubbish in this area. We hope to have a skip on site on the day of the cleanup to collect all this rubbish and engender some pride in the area.

Many thanks to the ARC's Environmental Initiatives Fund, the Birkenhead-Northcote Community Board and to the NSCC Parks Department for their support.

Motuora Planting Day

8:00am
Jun
28

NATIVE TREE PLANTING ON THE NEW TURANGA STREAM RESERVE

The Whitford Estuaries Conservation Society invites everyone to join in the native tree-planting program on the new Turanga Stream Reserve, near Whitford Village.

Park and meet on Wharf Road, Whitford Village

Over recent months the Manukau City Council has invested heavily in constructing an excellent walking/pony trail through the new reserve extending alongside the Turanga Stream and Estuary, from Whitford Road through Wade Road. This has included removing all exotic weeds, shrubs and trees ready for planting native trees.

Join us for the official start of the planting of about 14,000 trees over the next two months.
