On Monday 4th of May, Bill Mckibben, an internationally reknowned author, educator, climate lobbyist and the founder of 350.org , a rapidly growing global movement raising awareness about and action on climate change issues, will be visiting Auckland on his tour of Aotearoa.
The free Public Address will be given at 12.30pm in Room OGGB4 (Owen G. Gleen Building), University of Auckland - please RSVP to contact@nexusnz.org
Mckibben is an internationally well known climate change activist whom is spreading the word about what it means to genuinely deal with the devistating issue. His tour aims to initiate a gobal action day for climate change on October 24th in lead up to what many have called the most important international negotiations ever - The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December this year.
350 is the threadhold for human beings, unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth. The current concentration of carbon dioxide is at 387 and rising, what can we do to turn it around?

Aimed at up-skilling volunteers, the Nursery Bites programme of 14 mini-workshops is a great way to gain work experience and learn at the same time, and is definitely recommended for those wanting to gain practical, hands-on experience in native plant propagation or in working in the nursery field.
Sessions are free as part of a volunteer/work experience programme and have been funded by the Auckland Regional Council’s Environmental Initiatives Fund. Nursery Bites has been designed so that participants can take the whole series or just select the topics that interest them, from how to collect seeds, make plants from cuttings, pot on, grow native trees, irrigate and hand-water through to identifying and dealing with weeds, and nurturing threatened plants, ferns, wetland and riparian plants.
Nursery Bites will take place every Thursday morning 9am – 12pm from 12 February to 21 May (except Easter 9 April) at the Kaipatiki Environment Centre, 17 Lauderdale Road, Birkdale. The Centre will also be running working bees in the nursery on Mondays & Thursdays 9am-12pm. Sessions are limited to 20 participants a week so bookings are essential by calling 482 1172 or emailing restoration@kaipatiki.org.nz with your name and contact details and which week/s you will attend. For a detailed list of topics and dates get your Nursery Bites calendar by ringing Kaipatiki Project 482 1172 or go to www.kaipatiki.org.nz .

Hi there
Saturday week, 9 May, there will be a work day at the Forest and Bird Tuff Crater restoration site from 9am
Work will include releasing plants by hand ie clearing kikuyu from around them, cut and paint small privet, elaeagnus, gorse, moth plant etc.
Bring - if you have them – gloves, protective clothing – long sleeves, long pants, hat, sharp saw or pruners, spade
Park in the Canon car park on Warehouse Way, walk down the path between Canon and the Warehouse and turn left down the hill where you will see workers.
If in doubt ring Anne at 480 5570
For those who live on the south side of the crater, the most urgent work needed is to locate and remove moth plants and their pods. Each pod has 5000+ seeds inside which can travel many kilometres. So if we can stop them seeding we are on the winning side.
Kind regards
Richard Hursthouse

On Motuora Island we have approximately 22,000 seedlings for planting this year. Tree planting is done over the winter months generally starting in April or May (dependant on soil moisture) & concluding in August or September. This is done so the trees have enough time to become established in the dampness of winter to sustain them through the summer dry season. Come & join us on the last Sunday of each month to plant trees. There are plenty of spades and other tools on the Island so there is no need to bring spades with you, we have everything required.
The ferry departs from Sandspit 8 am returning at approximately 4 pm & costs $20 dollars for adults, $10 for children 5 years to 15 years and children under 5 years are free. We use Water Taxis which makes booking very important; if you turn up unannounced there may not be room for you. There is also an additional responsibility for those who book to come to honor their booking (except in emergencies) as some trips will be number limited.
We will provide a sausage sizzle with tea or coffee available in the nursery at lunchtime. You may wish to bring a snack & a drink for your morning tea on the Island. Please ensure that your footwear is clean of soil or seeds that may introduce unwanted weeds to Motuora and that there are no pests stowing away in your bags, big or small, exotic ants to rats & everything in between have the potential to adversely affect this special Island. Check out planting dates, other opportunities to help & find out interesting things about Motuora on our web site www.motuora.org.nz Bookings are essential on committee@motuora.org.nz or Eilene Lamb (09) 427 8911

Embrace the past,

This year's hui will be our first ever marae based annual Hui and a
milestone in grass-roots bi-cultural empowerment and partnership.
There will be several special guests speaking on a range of topics and
many of the 'elders' of permaculture in Aotearoa will present a synopsis
of their permaculture 'careers' thus far prior to receiving a PiNZ
Permaculture Diploma.
Hui activities will include making and eating hangi, raranga / weaving,
kapa haka, permablitz, making a cob oven, site visits and much much
more. Lots of laughter and entertainment guaranteed.
This event will use Open Space Technology to organise workshops,
networking and project development opportunities. Some of the workshops
already on offer include rongoa Maori (traditional Maori medicine),
Transition Culture, local food security, permaculture education, and
project funding.
One of our major objectives for this year's hui is to drastically
increase the attendance of Maori from all over Aotearoa who are active
in permaculture and its various expressions of /tino rangatiratanga/. We
want this Hui to be a milestone in grass-roots bi-culturalism in
Aotearoa New Zealand. Another objective for this year's hui is to
attract in many people new or unfamiliar with permaculture, yet who are
skilled and active in their own communities, to come and join in the
conversation about building a truly sustainable nation.
As per custom, on Sunday morning we will hold the PiNZ Annual General
Meeting. Help shape the direction of ecological design, active
citizenship, Transition Culture, community resilience and cultural
regeneration in Aotearoa today. At our AGM, after 30 years of
permaculture in this land we will evaluate how far we have come,
identify where we want to steer the permaculture waka for the coming
year and offer feedback, share ideas, create a shared vision and design
an action plan to move this country forward.
We are also warmly inviting back Transition leaders from all around the
country to join in and share their ideas, experiences and wisdom about
(re)designing resilient, thriving communities.
So write down the dates immediately in your rataka / diary; Call up and
invite all your friends; Bring your family, your passion and your best
ideas; and nourish yourself with a weekend of fun, whanau, inspiration
and community building.
Everyone is welcome!!! We look forward to seeing you there!!!

Check out planting dates, other opportunities to help & find out interesting things about Motuora on our web site www.motuora.org.nz Bookings are essential on committee@motuora.org.nz or Eilene Lamb (09) 427 8911 Map
